So it has been a while since I have filled you in on my Rabbit situation.
I don't know if I mentioned that I started a 4-H Rabbit group this past year. I basically have one person who is still pretty interested. I still love my rabbits I have a bunch now. I will update my photos soon. I had a Rabbit wedding between my beautiful Snowflake and my handsome Casper. I invited mostly neighborhood kids and a few adults. I served only rabbit friendly foods. I think I still have a few photos from the wedding. It was very cute. Wow!!! Almost exactly a month later Snowflake out did herself giving birth to 11 all white babies (just so you know only my children were present for the honeymoon). For those of you who don't know about rabbit genetics if you breed two Red-eyed White rabbits you will only get Red-Eyed White babies. Snowflakes last litter was exiting because I had no idea what I would get. This time was kind of boring, but I really love the white babies. Unfortunately 11 was way to many for Snowflake and nature took its course and 4 didn't make it. It was sad, I tried to feed some of them but to no avail. Seven is a much more manageable number. The day after the fourth one died (all within the first week) I came down stairs to find one of the babies on the wire floor of the cage and not in the nest box. "Oh, no!!!" I cried, "not another one". I opened the cage and picked it up. It was very cold and not moving to much, but it was still alive. I called to Haley in the next room, "Haley come in here and help me another baby is in bad shape". I had bought one of those red rubber water bottles for just this kind of thing. Haley and I, for about an hour and a half proceeded to warm the baby and try to get her to drink some of the kitten formula that I had bought. After about an hour and a half I decided that we had probably done as much as we could and I thought she might be better off in the nest with all her siblings to warm her. I really didn't have much hope for her. The next morning I came down to check on them. They were still under a couple of weeks old and in the nest box. I took out the nest box to check on the babies and in the bottom of the pile was the little baby that Haley and I had been trying to save. She was moving more but she was no longer white, she was yellow. Since she was very weak and cold she had made her way down to the bottom of the nest. Being on the bottom all her siblings had peed on her. Just a couple of days later she was completely white again. I guess mom cleaned her up. She still remains smaller than the others but she is by far the sweetest of the bunch. I lovingly call her Urine. Of the seven babies that survived only one turned out to be a boy, the rest were girls. Charlotte fell in love with one of them and has asked to keep it. She now lives in one of the great hutches that I got from the delightful Sue Kenney of Norwich, VT. Charlotte's rabbit has a little companion with her a little black bunny that I bought from Ackers Angoras in Maine. Charlotte's white bunny has been named Flurry and the Black bunny is named Ebunny (pronounced Ebony, I just thought I would spell it in a cute way). ebunny is about the same age as the white babies, they are all about 3 months old now.
I recently started going to a farm in Canaan, Stone Ridge Fiber Farm http://stoneridgefiberfarm.homestead.com/ . The woman who owns it, Mary, holds a fiber night twice a month. I try to go every time. She also has Angora rabbits. In fact, my first Angora that I got from my friend Pam Miller of Main Street Farm in Meriden, NH originated at her farm. Mary still owns his full brother and his mom. Mary had also had a recent litter of all fawn colored babies, nine in all. I had been wanting a fawn colored bunny for a while. We made a deal that we would trade bunnies (she wanted some white rabbits). So when her rabbits were ready to go I picked out two fluffy adorable reddish girls and a couple weeks later I delivered to her a pair of white fluffy girls. I had decided that I wanted to name one of my red girls Ginger, and then I needed a name for the other one. I decided to go with Mary Ann (being a Gilligan's Island Fan). I told Mary the names and in the theme of things she named her two white bunnies, "Laverene and Shirley". To cute, I know. My next litter is going to have to have some "Star Trek" names. My next black/brown female will be Uhura, one of the males of course will be Captain Kirk and another of course will be Spock. Ooooohhh now I can't wait to have another litter. I still have two white girls I am looking for homes for. I think I may need to keep Urine. She is still in the hutch with Mom and they seem very happy together. Not to mention that my neighbor Chrissy from accross the street is madly in love with her and comes over to clean her cage every couple of days. Chrissy helps me more than my own kids. One of the hutches that I got from Sue I put a divider in. They are very large huitches. I have Ginger and Mary Ann on one side and another rabbit I bought this past year named "Nana'. I named her that because her birthday is the same as my Nana's, June 12th. She is very beautiful and quite a nice bunny too.
